1. The house will be getting some work and becoming more solid. Decided to take the plunge. It's phase one of project restoration and preservation. Found out that even though it was built in 1949, it's innards, roof and floor plan are all consistent with homes built in the 1930's.

2. I work with great women and one in particular really amazes me. Mary is 85 and still works out at the gym. She looks great! I thought she was barely in her late 60's. She told me this story that I thought was really interesting. If you are a Hyde Park home owner or renter, is is just one of the stories your house could tell if walls could talk:

When Mary's husband returned from the war there was no place to live in town, Austin had a housing shortage. She had been renting a room in an old house in Hyde Park that was divided into small apartments. Mary and her husband lived there for only a short time before they had to move because the house had been sold and would be restored.

Rentals were equally difficult to come by after WWII so when Mary's best friend told her there was a small home for rent in the neighborhood, they both went to see it. Mary's friend was a new mother and had been married the year before. They were both newlyweds. The house was a perfect little 2/1 with living room, kitchen and bathroom. One house, two couples desperately needing a place to live. They thought about maybe sharing the rental. When Mary told me this I had to ask how large the house was. She replied," It wasn't large at all, in fact it was very, very tiny". I thought of our house, a vintage 2/1 housing two couples and a newborn. HOW?

Mary said it worked out fine for three years. (THREE YEARS?!)Each couple had their own bedroom that doubled as a private living room. After work they'd each go into their own rooms. Mary and her husband showered in the mornings and left for work very early. She said they were both working to save enough money to buy a new home. She said they ate dinner out everyday and just used the kitchen for coffee, toast and sandwich making. She said this way there was no need for pots and pans, dishes, dish washing etc... They split all utility expenses. I was amazed at how this worked out. I really can't see an arrangement like this working out. One bathroom?!

So when Mary and her husband bought their own home, they remained best friends with the couple that shared their old rental. They would get together once a week to make Mexican dinners at home, took trips to Mexico often and had their children grow up together. I just thought if walls could talk... nothing lurid or juicy about the story just that it happened and worked out is why I feel compelled to type it out.

3. Spring is fast approaching and looking forward to tackling the backyard, heirloom roses, fig trees and tomatoes. We'll see how much pans out. I do have a windowsill herb garden that seems pretty successful, so far.

4. Went to lok at a $364K home in the hood. Wow! It looked cute from the outside but I didn't find what was inside very appealing. It lost all it's vintage charm. Not even the floors were original. Wm fell in love with the screened in porch. He really wants a screened in porch. I noticed how the wall separated from the floor in some areas a good 1/2 an inch. YIKES! I can't imagine flips being very solid. I imagine a lot of rigged operations going on in crawl spaces, attics and between walls. I did like the screened in porch. 500sqft of it! But then again, that did seem like a bit much. Room for cartwheels and a patio bistro set is all I could see.

Doilies are IN

So I was serious when I proclaimed doilies to be the IT thing in my world. However, is it me just focusing on all things doily or are they truly, really IN, in the real world? The craft blogs, Etsy and various indie d.i.y stores have me thinking we all caught the same idea floating around. Well, whatever. I'll be posting bag o'doilies up on my website soon. For $8 you get two kitchy doilies.

TEETH

Opens Friday at the Alamo South! Yeah, we're all going to see it so we can see Claude's house. They had to stay at a downtown hotel for two weeks while they filmed the movie at their place. Rooms were remodeled, stuff packed away and put into storage, personal belongings lost, broken or stolen (says Claude). It was funny watching the news and seeing her neighbors protest the film. To this day a few them are still quite pissed.

Claude's house was picked because it is really awesome:  intercoms, paneling, built in bar, built in stereophonic system huge 60's ranch.

Acclimating minutiae

This is the first year I don't feel uber cold in 40 degrees. I was always pretty uncomfortable but I prefer it cold to hot. I think it was that hour and a half spent hopping waves at the beach in October. That was pretty chilly water. It hurt at first but then we became acclimated to the cold water. Lately I've found that the hoodie/thermal combo works just fine not knowing it's 31 degrees. WHAT? How'd that happen? Acclimation! So I've been able to enjoy the cold, gloomy days outdoors and not just from inside. Freezing rain and sleet predicted.

You know how skanky some of the Myspace pictures get? My friend got her account erased by Myspace for posting tiny photos of a cake in the shape of a penis. She is a pastry chef and she made this gag cake for a birthday party. Her account was private so no one could see the photos except 30 or so of her closest friends. It was just the cake, no one posing with the cake, cutting the cake or eating the cake. Just the cake. Nice to know that myspace does have boundaries and it seems that penis shaped cakes cross the line. Meanwhile...

Saw Juno and didn't like it. I read the reviews after I saw the movie. What was irritating in the reviews was every one of them noted the reference to Soupy Sales as being a grossly reached reference for a 16 year old. Really? Perhaps in this day and age it might be. However the character referenced Iggy Pop and, well, from Iggy Pop to Soupy Sales isn't quite a reach.
There is a whole lot more stuff crammed in that movie to cause your eyes to roll out of your head, don't get stuck on the Soupy Sales reference. Tres annoying movie. One movie that was uber annoying to me but to this day everyone seems to hold it such high esteem is: Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. ICK! I found the two main characters to be huge bores.

I dreamt of eggnog. I opened the fridge and there was a new bottle. I got so excited and popped it open, reached for the rum and nutmeg and it was the best eggnog ever! I was on a steady diet of eggnog and I guess it is hard to let it go. It's not like you can ween yourself off it. It is for sale for just a few weeks and then gone and you can't get it anywhere for the next 12 months unless you make it yourself. I don't want to do that. Eh.

I've been reading craft....hmmmmmmmmm, let's think about this. Okay, some things are better left not posted.

Recharged

Returned from a quick trip to Del Rio and feel recharged. I think the drive is what does it, all that space between stops, all that land. UGH! If it is to be developed one day, I hope it's after I am gone. People need places to go where they can just drive and see nothing but open space, just land in it's natural state or fields of dirt awaiting seeds.

We discussed gnosticism, listened to Gene Vincent and had yummy goodies from Haby's while en route. I do enjoy driving that stretch of 90 Castroville-Del Rio.

My grandmother always sends us back with yummy food: taquitos de chorizo con frijoles, chorizo con papas, calabazita, homemade tortillas and green salsa. My husband loves Mexican food, yay!

Each time I am in Del Rio it is like I never left and I do love that feeling. It is like a hug. Now I am back where I live and feel claustrophobic again. This town is just collapsing in on itself. Thank goodness for a big back yard with a wild chili pequin plant, lil bit of home!

Rhubarb Wine

I'm not a wine connoisseur by any means so if you are what I am about to write will offend you no doubt.. I tried Crimson Rhubarb Wine from Illinois yesterday and it is the loveliest wine. Not at all dry, mostly sweet, light and airy. I don't mind a dry wine but I live for Mavrodaphne, my palette leans towards the sweet. I have had the purest Sangiovese straight from Tuscany, direct from the vineyard, thanks to an Italian friend. That was a heavenly wine. The whole wine thing is whatever tastes good to ME. So rhubarb wine, oh yeah. Thanks, Margi!

About, Alice

Tonight I read About, Alice. The love letter Calvin Trillin wrote about his wife Alice. I had not heard of the Trillin's until this afternoon when a friend handed me the book to read and said pass it on when I was done. I thought, it must be valuable if I must pass it on and quickly began the read when I got home.

I realize I missed it in the New York Times and on NPR. I haven't been driving lately so no more NPR radio. I also keep forgetting my password, ughgrrrr and keep putting off the NYT when I have to enter it.

I enjoyed the book. My own pov and what I came away with was this: Everyone should be with someone they not only truly love but truly admire and find inspiring if they are going to be with someone. It makes life rich. I'm thankful for such a relationship. The other is: There is an art to living and you cut corners when you settle, so don't. Simple and cliched and true. I will add that you get more than one chance in this one life to make corrections. So, correct when you can. There are plenty of opportunities that only cease when we do. Keep trying until you get it right, but don't put off the struggle.

Preparing for Los Reyes Magos

This year we'll have champurrado with the cake (La Victoria).
This will close the holiday season. The tree went curbside earlier than ever. We usually take it down on the 7th. I notice a few are still up in the hood. Still, it is nice to have more room for company this coming Three Kings Day.

Update: We went with La Victoria for the Rosca de Reyes and it was the best ever! There were several filling options: Strawberry, cheese, pineapple and apple. Pineapple is an especially favorite flavor at our house, we love anything pineapple! William loved this year's cake, it was extra yummy. It went over tres well. Merry hosts next year's party!

Green minutiae

It is a very Spring like night. Thoughts are with growing basil, strawberries and mint. I had a lucky streak one year with strawberries. I grew them on my apt balcony, in a lil 5x7 window box. They were so sweet and yummy.

Down the street is a lovely, working greenhouse. Classic design, all glass, so pretty and inspiring. I have no green thumb but I've been playing with the idea of a grow rack. Even that seems a bit of a commitment. I tend to come up with ideas for hobbies and interests I'd like to take on then research them into the ground. This might be yet another. When I take on something I want to complete it, see it through.....so if it can't stick through the research and loses momentum, finito. But every now and then I want to take on something new and not just read about it.

I have always loved conservatories and the idea of a tiny Wardian case is appealing. The idea of a pretty begonia or African violet in one.... Nothing will confirm the lack of a green thumb more than a dead Bonsai or failed Wardian case. That's advanced gardening for me.

Anyway, I want more than one lonely basil plant (I love pesto) but less than a garden so a grow rack is a great compromise. Then again, there are several home improvement projects this year and uh....Should we get ice this month, my thoughts of herbs and strawberries will vanish (bye bye momentum) and thoughts of cocoa and marshmallow making will return. While I'm streaming thoughts and ideas...

We are taking down the large cottonwood in our yard this year. It has died. It will be sad to see it go. I loved the sound of it's leaves. Planting another oak in it's place. New beginnings.

Doily Month

Januarys are exciting. For as melancholic as I am on New Year's Eve, it all changes come New Year's Day.

Doilies! I call them pinwheels though. Making some up to placemat size. I had forgotten how fun it is to work with cotton thread. I am enjoying the color combos.

I forgot,

I have a day job. I left on the 18th and it doesn't take long to settle into a life filled with good things: eight hours of sleep a night, leisurely planning for the day, filling the day with creative endeavours, lunch dates with friends, lots of DVD watching with the sweetie, having more time than errands to run...In short, ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhh. Tomorrow it's back to the old grindstone. It's not such a bad grindstone. I guess I'm ready.
