Ben Carruthers
We are having an ongoing Benito Carruthers film festival. I had not seen The Dirty Dozen in a few years but I am sure I have watched it more than ten times. I always failed to notice that Carruthers was one of the dozen. Cassavetes always filled the screen for me. In fact I had forgotten Trini Lopez had a part. Trini Lopez?!
Carruthers reminds me of a cat who regally slinks quickly in and out of a room. He has a presence but the camera seems incapable of capturing him for long. There is constant movement and energy. I want Carruthers to hold still and the camera to focus clearly on him for all of twenty minutes. It would not be boring. In that way he reminds me of Tim Carrey. So far, none of the films we have seen that feature Carruthers have really captured him. He slinked quickly out of life as well, he was in his forties when he passed away.
Tonight is Goldstein.

I really loved Goldstein, more than i thought i would actually. It seems like the closest Benito Carruthers got to a starring role was his role in the film Guns of the Trees by Jonas Mekas. But it doesn't appear to be available on dvd. He is definitely a character that could stand more documentation. In the coming weeks i will be posting his early 60's 45 Jack O' Diamonds at my blog, which is in progress :>
